Remembrance

sara_05.jpgThe one year anniversary of Sara’s death was the 19th. As you know from previous posts, that is the Yahrzeit in the Jewish religion, which represents the opportunity to remember and honor someone who has died.

The weather for the 19th was predicted to be rainy, so those of us who knew Sara stood in the cemetery at the beginning of the dog walk path created by the volunteers who love this place as much as we do, and talked about her for a few minutes. There were some jokes, some shared memories, and I said a few words.

Then we all reached into the box that has contained her ashes for a year now and spread them around the cemetery so she could rest with the animals she loved so much. I sprinkled her ashes on the path, on the areas around the path, the woodpile, along the treelines. I remembered walking back here with her sometimes, a cigarette dangling from her mouth, talking about a particular animal or person or just ordinary stuff that makes up average conversations. Sara could be charming, interesting, and frightening in the same sentence. Quite a talent. I remembered some of her funnier lines and how she could size up people just about instantly.

Pets Alive Update - March 20

Nikki helpingSanctuary animal updates:
Since our last update on March 1st, we have found homes for Rusty, Opal, Lego, Trevor, Ellie, Peanut, Nikki, Sid, Aaron, Rebel, Arby and 16 puppies! That is 27 dogs in all. Our adoption coordinator, Patti P. doesn’t get enough kudos for all her hard work. She gets paid for just 20 hours a week, but probably puts in double that. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you Patti. (That’s Nikki helping Patti with some paperwork, and perhaps a sandwich!)

We ALSO found homes for two of our horses. Heather, our little mini horse went to a wonderful new home where there are two other minis. IMMEDIATELY when she got there, she trotted over to meet her new friends and they welcomed her very politely. One kick threat and one squeal and it was all over. They all went to the hay pile and started to eat hay together. They have been friends ever since.

The War Has Begun

More than 30 years ago the concept of No-Kill was introduced. The idea was simple — no adoptable or rehabilitatable animal in a shelter should be killed. There were two early advocates — Pets Alive and Best Friends.

We strongly believe in No-Kill at Pets Alive, and we have been the alternative to killing for hundreds of animals over the years.

No-Kill seems like a No-Brainer, doesn’t it? Who would be on Kill side? How about a veritable who’s who of the animal rescue and animal rights community, including People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

New Case Study - Tommy

tommy2.jpgAs each dog newly arrives to any shelter environment, I’m sure a plethora of emotions overwhelms them. Where are they? Why are they here? Who are all these strange people and loud noises? We are obviously not shocked to see some dogs behave very introverted before they become more accustomed to their new surroundings.Tommy was no exception. On his arrival on January 1st, we were delighted to meet this small, awkwardly designed (yet infinitely adorable) little man. At about 30 pounds, he appears to be some weird concoction of perhaps, basset hound, corgi, sheba inu, and a whole lotta mischief.

Kerry’s update - March 1st

Badgee and his new familySanctuary animal updates:
Since our last update on February 17th, we have found homes for Kane, Chip, Johnny, Kenny, Ned, Badgee, Newby, Barney (again), Elmer, four of the puppies, and Mr. Big (one of our cats). Did you notice that name? Yes! Our sweet Badgee got adopted! Go Badgee! That is him in the picture with his new family, and the woman in back is Lace, who was the one who took care of him for us.

In the past two weeks we also lost two of our cats - Bramble who was elderly and died of renal failure, and Miles who died of cancer related to his FIV. We will miss you guys. Please see the memorials posted on our website. You can also submit a memorial for your own pet, or a loved ones pet. Very sadly we also had to put Champ down this past week. Champ will be very much missed by everyone at Pets Alive.
