Case Study - Missy

Case Study “Missy”

By Dale Kantner, Cat Manager

missy.jpgWhen I started working at Pets Alive last June, I must admit to being a bit overwhelmed with the number of cats that lived here. I believe there were about 99, and they were divided into 6 rooms. There was one beautiful 8 year old kitty that lived alone in the kitchen, her name is Missy. I soon found out why Missy lived in the big kitchen all by herself, she HATES all of the other cats!! Or, as I tell her, she is so special that she gets her own room.

Those of you who know Missy, know that she is a staff and volunteer favorite. She definitely has her own personality, part sweetie pie and part MONSTER!

Kerry’s update - April 11th

Sanctuary animal updates:

Since our last update on April 5th, we have found homes for THREE CATS! Spunky, Barney and JJ are all going home or have gone to their new homes. Wheee! Three cats is a record for us. We also adopted out two dogs - Sandy and Ernie. This is just in the past six days folks, as this update is coming on the heels of the other because I have some important things to tell (and ask) you. Unfortunately I have to mention that Dusty (Beagle) and Arby (Shih Tzu) have come back to us.

Young Frankenstein Tickets

I’m pleased to announce that thanks to John S., there are a pair of tickets to Young Frankenstein up for auction on eBay. Show is Wednesday evening, 4/16/08, with 100% of the proceeds to benefit Pets Alive. The tickets come with a VIP backstage tour by Tony-winning actress Sutton Foster. Thank you John.

My Rescue Transport Debut - by John Sibley

My Rescue Transport Debut

On Thursday I was doing some repair work in the kennel at Pets Alive when Kerry, one of the directors walked in and handed me a list of dogs with photos from a kill shelter in the south. They call Pets Alive sometimes when they fill up with dogs - some of their workers try as hard as possible to get the dogs out so they don’t have to be euthanized. Kerry explained that the dogs on this list were out of time and their usual transport service was unavailable. They had priced out other transporters who wanted at least $100 per dog and there were at least 25 dogs in this transport, which was out of the budget. Would I consider driving a rental van about a thousand miles each way down and back? Oh, and there was a second stop - another meetup in a southern city 150 miles away. Time was of the essence - the dogs had to be spoken for by Friday and out by Sunday. I was a little surprised, to say the least, and I probably looked like I was waiting for a punchline - which I was, and it didn’t come. She was serious. I said I’d see what I could do and started making phone calls.

Kerry’s update - April 5th

Sanctuary animal updates:
Since our last update on March 20th, we have found homes for Sheba, Connor, BooBoo, Nelson (again), Eden, Gus, Kiali, Diamond, Cisco, Buttercup (again), Zoie, Hank, Myra, Bear, Harley, Blackjack…and a cat!!! Barney found another home, thank goodness! He was too young to spend his life here. He went to live with the people who adopted Kiali.

We BEG all our adopters to please post updates in our online forum. We LOVE to see the pictures and read the stories. Note that we have added a whole bunch ourselves, but we’d love to follow our animals stories, and so do our volunteers. Check out the adorable picture of Eden in there. Too cute! We also got updates on Hunter, Foxy, Rex, and more. Take a look, and add your own.

Daisy loves to playWe took in a wonderful dog from another rescue group this week that asked us to help. Daisy is just the sweetest rottweiler and was scheduled for euthanasia. A wonderful rescuer, Doreen could not stand to allow her to be killed. She spent her own time and money to save this dog and finally found us. We took Daisy in and we absolutely love her. Daisy is the most gentle, kind, fun dog. She has a great sense of humor and we all really like her. She is eight years old, has some arthritis, but she generally does ok, and she absolutely loves toys - especially balls of any kind. Come on down and play with Daisy. Or better yet, consider giving her a home. She’s had a really sad, sad life. She deserves a family to love her, and believe me, she will give that love back.
