Sanctuary animal updates:
Since our last update on April 5th, we have found homes for THREE CATS! Spunky, Barney and JJ are all going home or have gone to their new homes. Wheee! Three cats is a record for us. We also adopted out two dogs – Sandy and Ernie. This is just in the past six days folks, as this update is coming on the heels of the other because I have some important things to tell (and ask) you. Unfortunately I have to mention that Dusty (Beagle) and Arby (Shih Tzu) have come back to us.
Young Frankenstein Tickets
I’m pleased to announce that thanks to John S., there are a pair of tickets to Young Frankenstein up for auction on eBay. Show is Wednesday evening, 4/16/08, with 100% of the proceeds to benefit Pets Alive. The tickets come with a VIP backstage tour by Tony-winning actress Sutton Foster. Thank you John.

John has also written a great blog on his and Janet’s adventure to go and pick up the new dogs we took in. it really gives you an idea of what they went through to save these dogs lives. Wait until you see these dogs on our petfinders. They are still in their quarrantine period, so they are not available yet, but they are the sweetest most adorable dogs. Read John’s blog here.
Thank You Volunteers
I really want to thank Charlie this week. Some of you know Charlie as the guy that coms to Pets Alive every Wednesday to help us with our maintenance around here. Charlie does EVERYTHING from feeding puppies, to knocking down fences to repairing walls, to sweeping and dusting. Charlie always, ALWAYS has a smile on his face and he never complains or refuses to do anything needed around here. I can’t help but smile myself when I see him wandering around here. This week he read about our horse needs and he picked up two extra bags of pasture mix for us. He then proceeded to go and knock down some fencing to make our pastures bigger and to repair some other fencing that was falling apart. He’s here every week and we don’t know what we’d do without him. Thank you Charlie. You’re always a pleasure to have here.
Ingrid has also volunteered to pick us up another bag of pasture seed if needed. Thanks Ingrid! Thank you all for caring about the horses here. We can’t wait to move them to green grassy fields. Anyone want to come down and help groom some of them? I gave Molly a nice grooming and a bath this week and she really appreciated it.
Becky and Toni (serial volunteers) came down this weekend with agility equipment. Becky always comes armed to the teeth with toys and treats for the dogs. This week she came with jumps and ramps. So of course they got right to work with Sisko and Cam, teaching them how to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Well Cam LOVED the leaping part. This is “Air-Cam”. A dog like him would really appreciate this. I realy don’t know how to tell you all how touched I am by the people that come here every week to help. Thank you all so much.
Carmine and John continue to install the new dog doors that were provided to us by Joe. They are hard at work at it every week to ensure our dogs and our staff stay safe. Thank you guys.
I would be remiss if I did not mention our cat-caretaker’s (Dale) husband Tom. Tom has to be one of the sweetest, gentlest, kindest men I know. He comes down here at a moment’s notice to unclog toilets, repair something electrical, fix our cars, run the the store for us, or ANYTHING else that we need. He never asks for anything and he always comes through in a pinch. Thank you so much, Tom. You are a saint (and not just because you are married to our Dale! 🙂 )
Your help needed
Anyone know anyone at Tetz? I have been calling them trying desperately to get a donation of stone dust or Item 4. Enough to do our driveway and fill in some of the ruts and potholes. You can barely get down our driveway anymore it is so bad. If anyone has a contact at Tetz or any other stone or quarry company can you please BEG them to give us a dump truck of either of those items? We (and our cars) would be so grateful!
Need Dog Runs
We have two dogs that are in desperate need of a specific type of dog run. Bindy and Scrappy. Scrappy is a dog that is potentially dangerous to our other dogs here. We worry about our regular chain link fencing and really need to put him in something more solid (don’t worry– he is completely friendly with humans! He just does not care for other dogs). Preifert runs are super expensive. If any of you were here when Best Friends was, the runs our dogs were in then were these types of runs. We need to buy at LEAST 2 of them, and it would be best if we had five and could put all our “caution” dogs in these solid runs. Rose has donated the first one. Will you PLEASE consider making a donation to help us purchase more? Each panel is $189. An entire 10×20 run costs about $1200 (without a top). Would you be willing to donate the cost of one panel? This will keep our staff, our dogs and our volunteers and vistors safer. I did call the company and request a donation or a discount but they have so many requests for donations that they can’t do it they said. Sigh. We have to reply on you to help us get these runs. Thank you for you consideration.
Cats
Our feral cats need socialization. If you are a cat lover and have some time, we are asking for some help with getting our ferals to come out of their shell to make them more adoptable. Likewise our staff is in need of some help cleaning, especially on Wednesdays and Saturdays when there is only one of them on duty. They each work six days a week leaving two days a week (when the other is off for their ONE day) that they are short staffed. We would very much appreciate assistance on those days. Allison, Camille and Liz come down often to help but we could really use some extra hands. Thanks for your support!
Last Call
Jill is once again pestering me to pester you to donate a recipe for the Pets Alive cookbook. Can you please email Jill a recipe to be included? It does not have to be an original! Any recipe that is your favorite, we can use!
Addressing Envelopes
Our funds are running low here at Pets Alive. We desperately need an influx of donations in the next few months. Matt is working on a direct mail campaign and studies show that 99% of hand addressed mail will get opened. Getting our mailing OPENED is the biggest step toward getting a donation. We are looking for people to come (or take home) envelopes and hand address them to the people we are targeting. We DEFINITELY will need help. We are sending out a few thousand of these mailings and there is just no way we can hand address them ourselves. Please contact us to help!

Please consider helping us continue our mission
of finding homes for animals in need!
