Our transport blog - Written by Cathy Pahl

The below was written by Cathy Pahl - she and Lynne did a transport for us recently to help save 17 puppies.  Below is the hysterical write-up of her experience!

Well, you never know what you are in for when the Animal Help Assistant & Team Leader for Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) calls you when you are on vacation.  She can just be calling to say “hey hope you are having a good time.”

Remembering Aileen Hurley

Aileen HurleyAileen Hurley was a very special woman. She was an NYPD detective. She loved animals. She was smart, friendly, vibrant, fun, had a terrific husband and many wonderful friends. Aileen died in October of 2007.

We were visited several months ago by a group of Aileen’s friends. They wanted to organize a walk in honor of Aileen with the proceeds going to Pets Alive. A lot of people come in and out of our office in any given week, and they are all special. But I sensed something extra special with this group.

Carrie and Baxter Update

Carrie and Baxter Update
If you read our last update yesterday you’ll know that a judge awarded the woman who had 18 of her horses confiscated (due to neglect, cruelty and starvation), her choice of 6 horses BACK. This after the horses were seized and two so under nourished they could not stand. Pets Alive took in a mama and her four month old Baby (Carrie and Baxter) and we have spent over $800 taking care of them and getting them healthy.
Read article here. Another story (after the confiscation) can be found here.

The woman chose Carrie and Baxter to take back. We immediately offered $2000 to try to buy them from her. There is no end to the viciousness of this woman, as she is demanding DOUBLE that, to allow us to keep the horses SHE NEGLECTED. We don’t even have the original $2000 we offered her. Another $2000 is simply impossible….and she probably knows it.

So we are appealing to you.
Please help us raise the $4000. We can’t bear to let her have these horses back, after they are now so happy and healthy and looking forward to the possibility of good homes rather that living forever as dude ranch horses, with a woman capable of starving her animals to death with no compunction. Please help us.

Kerry’s Update - September 2nd, 2008

Sanctuary animal updates:

Since our last update on August 17th, we have found homes for Monique, Bisquit (YES!!! - our old, sweet, 14-year old pit-bull went to a FABULOUS home!), Dixie, SIX puppies, April (YES! APRIL!!!!!), Nicky, Bandit, Snoopy, GoGo, Louie, Aretha (she went to a wonderful home that will be doing therapy work with her in senior homes, kids hospitals etc!), we found a foster home for Mitch, and one cat went home - KitCat. Thank you to Kerri for all the really hard work she has put in these past few weeks. Linda adopted April and we’re so relieved. April is such a great dog and we’ve never understood why she has been here so long. Linda comes every day to care for and love our dogs, even the most difficult dogs adore her and she them. April could not be in a better home than where she landed. Perhaps she waited all this time so that she could be with Linda and Nick. Worth the wait.

Molly

That was the positive news. The negative is that ANOTHER of our horses has taken a turn for the worse. I know that almost all of our horses are very old, arthritic and in their extra senior years but it is still hard to see their bodies give way to that when their minds still seem so strong.
