We adopted two dogs from Pets Alive that happen to be from out of state. They are the loves of our life and we couldn't be happier. These dogs cannot choose where they are born nor can they choose when happens to them down the road. They could have been from NY and then were moved to South Carolina and abandoned. They are all helpless animals that need our help. There is more spaying/neutering that takes place in the northern states which is why there is an even worse overpopulation in the southern states. A good deed is a good deed. Helping one animal doesn't kill another.

Good Grief someone needs to put a sock in K's mouth! I just found your web site and thought you guys are THE BEST!!!!! How anyone can complain about what you all do at Pets Alive is beyond me. K needs to walk in your shoes for about a month. We all need to just help each other and it shouldn't matter if we need to cross a state line to do it.

Matt,
Bravo. Just to take the time to address this email was awesome. As my husband loves to remind me when fustration hits, "it's a non-ending job we do not looking for praise, yet quite fulfilling to the individual that is actively involved." Some people do not get it. Every little bit helps, even if its just 5 minutes to rub the belly of a homeless pet. Finances are of great importance, but when that holds you back, time is free. Donate time to rub the belly of a shelter dog. It is quite rewarding amazingly so. Just for the eyes of those that do not have a voice, to look back at you and say without words, how much they appreciate you is truely priceless. All of us involved in this mission (an inner calling to pursue an activity or perform a service) agree that we would love to save each and every beating heart and not for a moment we will let up in trying. So ask yourself if you are here on this site, "What is your mission here?" Can we take a moment of your time, save your disgruntled breath and take a stand to get involved, you may even like it. To all of you that share a heart in this life we lead of saving pets, I love you all and thank you for all that you do, words could never say enough.
So to K, take a moment to think, react and get involved. No monetary donation needed!

Matt, Kerry & PA staff and volunteers.
Please continue to help all animals in all places as you strive to do on a daily basis. Your dedication, determination and success are inspiring and for what it is worth from one Pets Alive advocate, I believe you are doing EXACTLY what should be done and will continue to support your life-saving work. All pets, regardless of where they are born, deserve a shot at a happy and safe environment and I'm thrilled that Pets Alive does everything it can for so many animals in need. You make a positive difference everyday -- I only wish more individuals were as progressive, caring and thoughtful. The emails you received displaying negative attitudes, lack of creative and critical thinking, and the constant need to criticize those who are not only trying, but succeeding in improving the lives of homeless pets, does absolutely nothing to save animals -- locally or elsewhere.

Matt,
I salute your response 'I don't do this to impress you'. I stand in awe of what you, Kerry and the staff at PA do and support you emotionally, spiritually and financially. The reason I don't support you physically is very simple and two-fold: 1) I don't have the guts or the emotional stamina to deal with the constant specter of death and sadness and 2)I live in California, also outside of K~'s magical radius. Keep up the fabulous work, I love you guys!

Hey Matt, this is Rhonda Sims, founder of Freedom Train Transports, and the one who was blessed to pull these 25 kids who traveled by air and Interstate to get to your wonderful haven. I want to thank you for advocating for ALL animals who are in need. I cannot help but believe that people who feel the way K` does, have never spent time in a kill shelter, for when I look at the unfortunate ones inside, I don't see geographical locale. What I do see are innocent faces who plead for mercy and a chance to experience a little kindness and maybe even love. I see hundreds of lives who couldn't help that they were born in the south, or bred then dumped by ungoverned "backyard breeders" or shunned because they were big and black and nobody wanted them. And I see hundreds of them die each week, because not enough people care, or too many people are sitting in judgement rather than jumping into action! I want to thank you all at Pets Alive for representing those who do care.

In reading K's comments, I got the impression that maybe she thought that there weren't any of "us" down here who were trying to change things. That is very untrue. Just as there are opposite sides to everything, there are also many people in the south, people who I am proud to call cohorts, who fight the good fight, and dedicate their lives to try and change things. We spend out time and effort attempting to change a mentality that is beyond our years, and its very frustrating and many times heartbreaking. I know, because I have spent more time than I would have liked, standing in front of county council members, begging for them to DO SOMETHING! We often find ourselves exhausting ourselves on both sides, holding our finger in the crack of the dam, while trying to lower the water level on the other side. We could just sit and offer philosophies to others about their actions, but we can't stop saving animals long enough, and really we just don't have any energy left for offering criticisms.

Contrary to what K~ may beieve, southern rescuers aren't sitting around strategizing over how to send our animals up there so that they will get adopted in place of the northern animals finding their homes. We love ALL animals, and a life is a life, just like death is death. We have thankfully accepted help from northern rescues, because of the information that has been given to us about less numbers in shelters in the north due to greater spay/neuter ordinances. I have many, many friends up north who have always agreed with this, and have always been just as thrilled to see southern animals get rescued and sent north as I.

Finally, I would just like to respond to K's claims regarding all of the money spent on transporting the dogs up north. As for my transports, there are never any transport fees. My volunteers donate their time, gas, vehicles, and hearts, and therefore it never costs any animal one penny to be transported to their safe place. Additionally, the 25 animals who were the subject of this article, were all fully vaccinated, heartworm tested, spay/neutered, examined by the vet and given health certificates for travel. Its the only way I will ever do things as a reputable rescuer, and one who cares about the wellbeing of the animals and the rescues receiving them.

Thank you for the opportunity to represent the "others" down here, who truly do care and are insanely trying to make things better. And thank you for opening your hearts and doors the way you do.

-------
From MATT:

I am absolutely speechless. I have been planning to write a blog entry on the New York CACC and Pets Alive and how kill shelters devalue the lives of these animals until it makes no difference what happens to them since they are going to die anyway. K~'s attitude is the same.

We applaud and appreciate what the people like you (and there are thousands of you in the South) are trying to do. We will always support you 100%, and our supporters, those angels that keep us going and support us more than just monetarily have told us in no uncertain terms which side they are on.

It's very easy to stop fighting as those of us making a difference live day after day staring into the mouth of the meat grinder. The fact that there are always people like K~ there to poke us with sticks is one of the wonders of the universe, and proof that God has a sense of humor.

Keep up the great work and thanks for posting here.

Matt & Kerry

Matt, I applaud your efforts and would like to hug every single person at Pets Alive. I was lucky enough to find Pets Alive and i adopted my sweet Tilly one of the southern dogs. I have had this sweet angel only a week but she is already a member of my family and I can't even imagine what it would be like without her. I didn't care what color, breed, she was I just wanted a companion.

Let me first say that K~ should get off the computer and into a shelter, no matter what shelter and volunteer. I guess since I am from NJ, I should have only adopted a dog from a shelter near me and also have volunteered at a shelter near me. I shouldn't drive the hour each way to volunteer and adopt. That would be the K~ logic. I am a recent volunteer at Pets Alive and also just adopted "Eddie." I was turned on to Pets Alive by another volunteer, Debbie. I wanted to volunteer with my children at a local shelter but they would not take my kids, so we ended up here. I wanted to teach my children how to care for a life and teach them responsibility. Education starts in the home..Ignorance is sitting on the computer doing nothing, like K~. Well since we adopted Eddie, my 9 year old is really making great strides to care for him and teach him obedience, eventhough he is a "southern" dog! I want to say that I have been to numerous "shelters" and kennels and P.A. is by far one of the cleanest, in sight and smell, and friendliest that I have encountered. They make you feel at home and I thank them for letting me be apart of not only the volunteer family (with mine), but the adoption family. Lastly I am affiliated with a SPCA, and I know what I see and what I am talking about. P.A. you got my support! Keep up the GREAT work!

Matt here. Then you too are ignorant. And this is MY blog -- I can have as many nasty and immature tirades as I wish. Get your own blog and say whatever YOU want. I'm sure K~ would read it.

Lastly, I don't do this to impress you. I couldn't care less about your ego.

You've shown the depth of your reasoning ability. At least you admit to your first name. Perhaps you and K~ can get together and look for animals to save in your front yards. At least you made me laugh today. Thanks.

Well, I am one of those "ignorant" people out here who happen to agree with K~'s perspective and given my communications with others in the rescue and shelter community, we are not alone in our perspective. But that is not the point. Whether you agree or disagree with our perspective, I must say that your nasty and somewhat immature tirade about her views and your demeaning comments about her perspective doesn't leave me feeling particulary impressed with you and your organization.
