No one should ever have to justify why they save an animal.

I love your site! I am looking into starting a "no-kill" rescue based on the same principles and morals that you hold. Good for you! I believe that every animal deserves the chance to live. Whether it is aggressive or not, dogs do not just turn bad. I thank you for your story, and giving me the motivation to push forward with my goals. Hopefully one day soon I will be able to blog about this as well!

Thanks, Kerry - that's EXACTLY what no-kill means and why I appreciate all you guys do. We are hoping to start a sanctuary just northeast of the Capital District. Maybe I can learn some things from you guys and pass it forward. I hope to visit you one day soon.

Lisa - yes, this is very true, but the story is from Pets Alive point of view and we only have one cat that is probably a lifer - Oreo - which is pictured here in this article. But cats are terribly maligned and get much less attention than dogs in shelters. I almost want to suggest to people that if you find a stray cat LEAVE IT - don't take it to the shelter where it will LIKELY be killed. It is a terrible state of affairs.

John - thanks for that, I had forgotten that. Bookmarked now.

Honor - you guys have done a lot for us. We appreciate you and your family!

Bobbie - you have supported us - so often and in so many ways. I can never thank you enough for all you do for us. The letter you wrote this year was spot on too. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Wanda and Shanon - thanks a lot for the kind words.

Well said, & while I sincerely support what Pets Alive is doing for all animals, please remember many, many more cats suffer and are killed in shelters and animal control facilities. Dogs consistently get top billing in public appeals and media. When discussing these issues it's important to always say dogs AND cats... and goats, pigs, horses, chickens, etc, etc! :)

To quote my kids, "YOU KILL ME" (they are definitely watching too much TV). (And probably an inappropriate response--although meant in jest). WHAT an amazing essay. All I can say is that we are so lucky to have found Pets Alive and all of the amazing people who work and volunteer there. You are such an inspiration for my kids and for everyone who follows what you do.
I don't think there is any need to apologize for the "lifers". We've seen how many dogs who were "lifers" have moved on in the few months that we've been volunteers at the shelter. My kids are always looking for the "red dogs" and are always happy to see one has gone home.
We are all so glad that you will be around for another year, and hope to help you be around for a heck (kids again) of a lot longer. Thank you for Kip and Henry (he has blossomed in the last month or so--a really great dog) Honor

There are formal definitions of healthy and treatable as defined by the Asilomar Accords, though some shelters unfortunately do play games with them.

I prefer your definition, which is pretty much all of 'em.
