Anthony Trott – Muralist to the Stars….or PetsAlive anyway….

So back in January we get an email from this guy named Anthony.  He is an artist (well not in REAL life, in real life he does document handling or something that isn’t as interesting as his painting).  He said the following:

anthony.jpgFirst, I would like to say that I absolutely love this sanctuary. I would love to visit some day, hopefully with an adoption in mind. Currently, I am starting to work on a series of Acrylic Paintings, small ones, that I plan to leave at random places like bus stops or libraries, shelters, where ever, for people to just take if they want it, for free. These works will be my “Inspire” series, and have the number in which they were painted on them.  In addition to the rest of the information about the paintings, I would love to place the web address for Pets Alive on the back of the paintings.

Wow. How amazing is this? Someone that never met us, found out about us, believed in what we do here and is using his talent to make a difference for us.  We were amazed.  Anthony and I chatted on and off in email for a while, then he donated some oils for our Penny Social and then we got around to asking him if he would do a mural for us on the wall, on the brick house stairs.  We had wanted to do this for some time but the artist we had been talking to lived very far away and we couldn’t make it work out.  Anthony started later that week.  First he had to prime the walls – he did the entire downstairs and upstairs.  It looked great.  Then he came every weekend until the mural was done.

This past Sunday, he finished.

It is so cheery and so happy and really fun.  It brightens the whole house and everyone who walks in stops to stare and they ALWAYS smile and say something akin to “wow”.  Yep.  Wow. In the past few months we’ve all gotten to know Anthony, he has helped us in various ways and attended our events, and now I wouldn’t hesitate to refer to him as a friend.  Check out his website too when you get a chance: http://www.anthonytrott.com/

Thanks Anthony for doing this for us.  It’s beautiful and greatly appreciated!  Below is a picture (pending a better from Becky – I am no photographer) and of course that is Scrumpy (aka Tommy) sitting at the top.  I LOVE it!  Always puts a  smile on my face when I walk in here (as if there wasn’t enough reason to smile before!).

Kerry’s update: April 9, 2009

Augie is so cuteSanctuary animal updates:
Since our last update on March 12th the following dogs were adopted: Owen, Lilah, Arnie, Xandy, Swampy (but came back), Dylan, Clarence, Augie, Connie, Darla (but came back), Pokey, Daffodil, Jasper, Murphy, Blue, Kylie, Miriam, Doty, Diamond, Williard, SunLi, Suzy, Miley, Isis (but came back), Abby, Meadow, Garth, Rufus, Jillie, Middy, Rigsley, Lil Pip, Smokey, Zippy, Sounder, Kendall (came back and was adopted again), Sonny, Pancake, Blossom and Astor. Yes, that is 40 dogs. Nice going everyone!

We even adopted out two cats. Not only that but they were FIV cats! Sweet Pea and Ginny went home. Two FIV cats…it is just so wonderful that people are starting to understand that FIV cats are not something to be terrified of. We’re going to add a section (thanks Sandy!) to our website (as soon as I can find ten minutes to get to it) about FIV cats and the myths, etc. Unfortunately we also had a cat that died this month – our older feral cat Zack passed away. R.I.P Zacky.

One of the standouts as far as adoptions goes is Middy. Middy got adopted by Extreme Canines. Check out their website. They have videos that will blow your mind. Our little Middy is going to be a performance dog. GO MIDDY! They are also interested in coming back here at the end of the summer to do a fundraiser with us. How cool would that be?

Upcoming Events

Giant Egg Hunt at Pets Alive – with special guest

On Saturday, April 11th (from 11am – 3pm), Pets Alive will be holding our first annual Egg Hunt and Family Fun Day!

The Easter bunny has agreed to make a special appearance at Pets Alive on April 11th. He is coming to run a giant egg hunt and many games and prizes for the kids. There will be face painting, prizes, photos, food, cotton candy, and much more! We will also have a spring flower sale and a bake sale. Event will run between 11 am – 3 pm. Fee is $2 per child (extra donations always welcome as well as bake sale items!) This should be a really fun event, we hope you will come!

Yuk it up to benefit Pets Alive

Middletown’s own Manhattan Comedy Club (YES! – this is in Middletown, just ten minutes away from Pets Alive) is hosting a night of comedy to benefit Pets Alive.

The event will take place on April 19, at 7:00 PM, at the Manhattan Comedy Club, 400 rt 211 East, Wallkill Plaza, Middletown, NY. There will be three comedians, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and a short live auction with an auctioneer, and cocktails! Steve Schaffer from the Tonight Show, and Comedy Central’s Tony Darrow and Rich Franchasi will be performing that night. Tax deductible snickers, chortles and guffaws, and the money goes to Pets Alive. What could be better? You can buy your ticket right now by clicking the link below – or from the main page of our website (which allows you to buy multiple tickets). Tickets are $45:

We must sell 100 tickets to this event! Please ask your family, friends and neighbors to come along. We have only sold 25 tickets so far and if we don’t sell at least 100 more, we will have to cancel the event and refund those purchases. Please help make this event a success. We are trying very hard to raise money by giving something back – a dinner, an all day event, a comedy night – anything to try to raise much needed funds but also provide you a day or an evening out along with a tax deduction. We know the economy is in a bad way, which is prompting us to try to be more creative in our fund raising attempts – so please help support us in this way, as well as the businesses offering up their halls and clubs to us for the night.

Ten plane loads of dogs destined for death – saved!

Tulip likes the window seat!

On February 21st, at 2pm, privately owned small airplanes flew their own mercy mission, bringing 15 dogs targeted for euthanasia in South Carolina to Orange County airport and ultimately to sanctuary at Pets Alive.

All of these dogs were rescued from kennels where they were among as many as 250 dogs to be put to death this week alone in just ONE shelter in South Carolina. Every one of them was scheduled to die this morning. Many of the shelters there have as high as a 99 percent kill rate. Instead of being put into the gas chamber, they were whisked away and transported by ground from South Carolina to North Carolina where the pilots loaded them aboard and flew them to safety.

A group of local Pets Alive volunteers met the pooches at the airport and brought them to our shelter where we examined them, checked them into runs with good food, a warm Kuranda bed and fresh water and we started to prepare them for adoption.

Another 10 dogs are being driven to Pets Alive on Sunday as part of the continuing rescue effort.

All of these dogs are young, highly adoptable and friendly. It was a great day. Planes coming out of the air, all of them with dogs on board that would have been dead today. (Please consider adopting a homeless animal).

Special thanks to all our volunteers for going out to the airport on almost no notice, waiting around for over an hour and a half because of transport delays and then bringing these wonderful dogs back to our shelter. Thank you to Rhonda Sims and Freedom Train Transport for coordinating, Kerri our adoption coordinator for making it all go smoothly and to AnimalRescueFlights.org and Pilots-N-Paws for helping to save all of these dogs. Every pilot donated his time, fuel expense, their own plane and their love and compassion to make it all happen.

We can’t thank you all enough. Click here to see photos of the arrival. Thank you to Becky Tegze for the photos.

Pilots and Dogs they saved

Thank you so much to our FABULOUS volunteers! Lisamarie, Lorraine, Eileen, Frank, Suzy, Sarah, Michael, Dina, Alyssa, Jo, Paula, Jan, Alina, Richard, John, Betty and Yvonne. We had hours to pull this together and we were so grateful for you all to leaving everything to rush down there and help. THANK YOU!

Kerry’s update: January 31st, 2009

Sanctuary animal updates:

Remember that just a few short months ago this girl could not even be handled. Today she is in a loving home and her people have already posted updates about her. Thanks again to Pat W. and to Best Friends for helping us to help Amelia. We’re so very happy for her.  Check our forum for updates on her.

Mindy Update – January 13th

So many people have been emailing us to ask about Mindy that we thought we would send out an update.

Yesterday Mindy came home to Pets Alive!

We are all beyond excited. I can’t even tell you. Mindy is happy and looking very healthy. Matt and I tossed a ball around for her in the volunteer lounge, loved her and hugged her to death. She is just so much fun, full of so much love and exuberance. I really adore her. She is tremendously precious.

Mindy is still not out of the woods. She has so far beaten Canine Influenza, and she has beaten Equi Streptococcus, but she is still weak with a possible auto-immune issue. This could possibly be the result of all the trauma and physical stress she has been through and it is possible she will bounce back completely, but it is also possible we could still lose her as her blood cell count drops and her own body works against her.

Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and stop in to see her.
She is an absolute JOY to be around and to play with.

This has been a VERY expensive two weeks – all started with trying to save Mindy. We all feel though that if she makes it, it will ALL be worth it. All the expense, all the work, all the quarantine, the closing of our shelter and the stress on everyone involved. It all hinges on little Mindy. If she survives….we’ll never look back with regret! Go Mindy Girl. We’re ALL pulling for you sweetheart.

Mindy is still looking for a home. She seems to have no aggression at all, seems to be ok with cats and so far although we have not tested her with other dogs, she does not seem highly interested in them in a negative way either. Won’t you consider opening your home to this little one, that has been through so much?

If you missed the original story of Mindy and all that has happened, you can read her story here.

We are in great need of Kong type toys. If anyone can donate some kong toys for all our sick dogs that would be very helpful. There’s a toy from Aspen Pet called “dogzilla”. They’re rubber like the kong (but dumbbell shaped) and the rubber is infused with some kind of protein and scented/flavored to attract dogs. We have a couple and the dogs LOVE them. Even our voracious chewers seem to be able to make these toys last a long time. The ends of the dumbbells also have holes for stuffing. We hope to get a lot of these so that we can give the dogs something to do when they’re not getting walked as much. Please donate a few if you are able. If you are a volunteer – PLEASE continue to come down even in the winter. We need you. The dogs need you. We know it’s cold, but they really need and love to get out!

Please consider helping us continue our mission
of finding homes for animals in need!

Kerry’s update: January 5th, 2009

Sanctuary animal updates:

Since our last update on December 15th the following animals were adopted: Dakota, Pancake, Spot, Emma, Charley, Satchel, Manhattan, Bull, Natalie, Twilight, JB, Bubba, Lincoln, Jack, Sandy, Willow, Huckleberry (again), Monkey, Larry, Jacque, Hamilton and July. (That is Jacque on the right).   Ivy the cat was also adopted!

General Updates:

We had a real scare these past few weeks and shut down intakes and adoptions for nine days. We are a shelter. As such we are ALWAYS going to get “diseases” in that we need to guard against. Parvo, FIP, FELV, Canine Influenza, heartworm, even pregnant dogs that we are not aware of, fleas and worms and coccidia – you name it, we are at risk for it. Many of these things can not be tested for prior due to the lack of feasible tests or the lack of funds on the sending shelters, or the extreme emergencies of the situations at hand – usually life or death for these animals when we agree to take them. We have good quarantine practices to keep it from infecting the rest of the shelter but last week we were sorely put to the test on quarantining contamination.

On December 21st we got this asking if we could help:

My neighbor, a 48 year old man died in his apartment nearly 2 weeks ago. No one checked in on him before yesterday whereupon his body was discovered. His young shepherd mix, Mindy, by his side. The dog has been taken to Animal Control in Brooklyn, NY. She needs a home right away or will be put down. Can you intervene please? Please phone me. Mindy is a good dog. Even when the police entered the apartment she sat steady by her dead companion. She does not require re socializing-but has experienced extreme trauma. Time is of the essence.  Read the rest of this entry »

Kerry’s update: December 15th, 2008

Sanctuary animal updates:
Since our last update on November 24th the following animals were adopted: Tucker, Baylee, Dante, Miles, Nina, Julie, Roc, Lady, Buddy, Trixie, Dorothy, Glinda, Harley, Oz, Toto, Juggles, Buddy (again), B.P., Bert, Glinda, Jupiter.

The following cats were all adopted too: Frankie, Johnny, Shady, Stevie, Daisy, Betsy, Reddy, Miss Kitty and Fiona. Nine cats! OUR RECORD! Dale said to tell everyone that she “rocks”! Of course we must also mention Kerri, our adoption coordinator, who has been doing an amazing job of placing our dogs. Amazing! Thirty animals went home in twenty days. How sweet is that? Have you checked our forum lately? Our adopters often post updates and pictures of the dogs and cats they adopted from us. It is the best part of my day to go there and read those. Be sure to check it out!
